About Chandni Chowk of Delhi

Chandni Chowk is a historic market in Delhi. This market was formed more than 350 years ago and evolved to where several different types of retailers can be found in the area. The best point about Chandni Chowk is that it is located right around a number of important historic sites around the city of Delhi.

This market was built in 1650 under the direction of Shahjahan, a Mughal emperor. This occurs as Shahjahan moved the capital of his property out of Agra and into Delhi. This was done as a means of helping to create a public space that could accompany a fort that he created.

The placement of the market in Delhi is around the northern part of the city. This is a part of what was once referred to as Old Delhi.ADS_TO_REPLACE_1

The shape of the market was designed with a large pool in mind. The pool that was originally at Chandni Chowk featured a large gathering of shops arranged in a half-moon shape. This design was created by Jahanara, a daughter of Shahjahan.

A canal used to go through Chandni Chowk. The Faiz Nahar canal once moved through the market and provided it with the water it needed. It has since become inactive.

There were also a series of fountains in the area when the market was first built. However, those fountains have been demolished in favor of additional retail spaces and for places where people can walk through when moving around the market.ADS_TO_REPLACE_2

Today the market is home to several different stores. The market is home to mostly traditional vendors. These include vendors that sell mostly traditional Indian goods. These include copper, steel, iron and brass goods. The market has become a little more modern in recent years in that it has been selling a variety of electronic goods in recent years.

There are also a number of restaurants in the area. These include a variety of places that are noted for making traditional Indian sweets and other types of foods. The Ghantewala Halwai is one of the most notable places like this in the area. It has been operating as a snack shop for more than two hundred years.ADS_TO_REPLACE_3

Interestingly enough, Chandni Chowk has managed to hold onto much of its classic design. This has been a hindrance in some cases though. The walkways around the market are known for being very congested throughout much of the day.

A big point that the market has is its proximity to many different historic sites. The location of Chandni Chowk is right next to the Red Fort, a historic fort in the outskirts of Delhi.

There are also several important religious sites that can be found around Chandni Chowk. The Fatehpuri Masjid can be found in the middle of the market. This mosque is at the western part of the market. Its white marble domes and massive minarets make it easy for people to find when in the market.ADS_TO_REPLACE_4

The Digambar Jain Lal Mandir, a Jain temple, is also in the market. This old temple has been around since the middle seventeenth century. This space can be easily noticed by its large red sandstone towers.

There are several other religious sites around the area. There are more than twelve different religious worship sites around the market. These include mostly Hindu and Jain temples. There are also some churches and mosques in the nearby area.
