About Lotus Temple of Delhi

The famous Lotus temple of Delhi is one of the seven Baha'i Houses of Worship in the world. This meticulous structure was completed in 1986, and has been opened for the public since then. As the name suggests, this awesome piece of architecture, which resembles a Lotus, the national flower of India, has won several architectural awards.

Structure of the Lotus Temple New Delhi:

The Lotus Temple of Delhi has an Expressionist form of architecture. According to the Baha?i belief, the House of Worship must have a circular shape of nine sides. The Lotus Temple of Delhi was built by an Iranian architect, Fariborz Sahba. The entire area of the temple premise is of 105,000 sqm. The central hall of worship in the temple has a capacity to accommodate 2500 persons at a time. There are nine doors that allow entry into this huge hall of the temple.ADS_TO_REPLACE_1

The Baha'i scriptures also spell out that there can be no statues, pictures or images can be displayed inside the Temple premises.

  • Ardishir Rustanpur of Hyderabad had been generous enough to donate his entire life savings to buy the plot for Lotus Temple to be constructed.
  • The architect, Fariborz Sahba, was approached in 1976, to construct the Lotus Temple. He later managed the fund in such a way that he could also make a greenhouse, where plants and flowers were studied that would be suitable for planting in the premises.
  • The Delhi Lotus Temple, the Bahai House of Worship, attracts a good number of visitors in a year. With about 4.5 million visitors in a year, it also surpasses the Taj Mahal when it comes to numbers of visitors.
  • A CNN report has listed the Lotus Temple of Delhi as the most visited establishment in India.
  • In Sikkim, there is a Shiva temple, the Hindu Legship Mandir, which has been made replicating the famous Lotus Temple of the capital city.
  • The Lotus Temple of New Delhi is also featured on a stamp of Delhi of Rs. 6.50.
  • Not stopping at just these, the Lotus Temple went on to making its way to the Guinness Book of World Records, in the year of 2001.
