Inhabited first by Polynesians around 3000 years ago, Tuvalu is an island country located in the Pacific Ocean. Spanish explorer Alvaro Mendaņa discovered the islands in 1568 and British started colonizing the islands from late 19th century. Tuvalu gained independence in October 1978 and is a United Nations member since 2000.

The geography of the Tuvalu is mainly dominated by low-lying areas. At around 5 metres is the most elevated peak in the island. Funafuti is the largest atoll in Tuvalu. The island is famous for Ecotourism. The beautiful beaches, lagoons and reefs this island is endowed with, fascinates tourists who have started to come here in large numbers. Tourism along with some foreign aid drives the economy of the country as it lacks the essential natural resources. The traditional sport of kilikiti, a form that is very alike Cricket, is the most popular in the islands along with the other sports like football, rugby and volleyball.
