Explore the Surprises of Delhi
Much like the country it is located in, New Delhi, the capital city of India,
exerts a magical pull over all types of tourists. The city has seen history
being carved many times, and has endured plunder and destruction, only to rise
again. It has an odd, and interesting, mix of places to see, and no matter how
much time you have on your hands, you will never be out of surprises.
Shall we begin sightseeing tour of this wonderful city of Delhi?
Travel to Delhi Red Fort
In what is known as Old Delhi, you can visit this magnificent Red fort made from
red stone. This robust construction was undertaken by the Mughal Emperor
Shahjahan in 1639, when he decided to shift the capital of his empire from Agra
to Delhi. Since then, the fort saw the fall of the Mughal Empire, the rise of
the British rule, the Indian struggle for Independence, and the consequent
freedom. This beautiful structure is as imposing as it is appealing. Don't miss
it.
Chandni Chowk Trip of Delhi
Just close by the Red Fort in Old Delhi is the iconic Chandni Chowk, which was
part of the magnificent city built by Emperor Shahjahan. Today, this place is
the largest wholesale market in all of Asia, and you can shop here for
practically you'll ever need. This is the Indian culture at its best. But you'd
need to be a bit careful, as the place gets jam-packed on weekends and evenings.
If you can, avoid driving here at all costs.
Visit to Lotus Temple of Delhi
Situated in the calm and serene environs of South Delhi, the temple, as its name
says, is carved in the shape of a lotus. Beautiful little pools and lush lawns
surround this famed meditation hall, giving the place a charm of its own. It has
been built by the Baha'i community, and as such is also commonly known as the
Baha'i Temple. Sitting here for even five minutes will fill you with limitless
calm and energy.
Qutab Minar Travel Information
Staying within South Delhi only, you can then move on to see the towering Qutab
Minar. It is made of red sandstone, and stands at a breathtaking 72.5 feet! Each
section is done in skillful engraving of motifs and verses from the Holy Quran.
It was built by the ruler Qutub-ud-din Aibek in the 13th century, and most
probably served as a watchtower. The top section is now closed, but affords the
view of the entire city.
Must to see Delhi - India Gate
Located in central Delhi, this is memorial constructed in the memory of army
soldiers who laid down their lives for the country during the First World War.
The place has lush green lawns extending on all sides, and becomes a popular
tourist spot of much tourist activity during the evenings. But avoid being here
during summer afternoons, as New Delhi's weather can be extremely unforgiving
during these days.
Rashtrapati Bhavan - One of Tourist Spots of Delhi
This building serves as the official residence of the President of India, and
literally translates to "Presidential Palace". Going by its architecture, the
name has some claim to fame, for sure. Designed by the famous architect Lutyens
of the British Empire, it served as the main administrative building when the
British shifted their capital from Calcutta to New Delhi. Housing an incredible
340 rooms, the building is a marvelous piece of architecture and is a must-see
on every tourist's list.
Reaching these places is extremely easy in Delhi. All you need to do is take
ride on the metro train to the nearest terminal, and the attraction is not more
than a short walk away. Make sure to get a map so that you can plan your trip in
advance.
