Over the past few years, we have seen the advent of vehicle tracking and fleet tracking systems being used to a large extent. Fleet tracking is done by an organisation to keep a track of the fleet of vehicles. It requires installation of monitoring devices like GPS (Global Positioning System) and GLONASS (Global Navigation System) on the fleet vehicles

A number of fleet-tracking devices are use today. They belong to the category of Passive and Active devices. Passive devices supervise all the information but this information can only be seen when it is downloaded to the computer. Active devices on the other hand give information in real-time. These days, some tracking devices have started using both, Active and Passive devices. These devices monitor and display the information if the network is available, but if network is not available, they store the data so that it can be viewed later. Vehicle tracking determines the speed, position and direction to which the fleet is heading. The use of fleet tracking can be seen in everyday scenario. It helps the passenger in knowing the arrival and the departure time of the transport vehicles. They can get the information regarding the bus or train numbers to arrive at the platform. Tracking system assigns a unique number to every vehicle.

This type of tracking proves to be very important in regard to private businesses. Organisations prefer to know every minute detail, as they don't want to incur losses. They track down every single piece of information that they can get, even the driver's behaviour.

This technology is used by the organisations to curtail the risk involved in the investment that they have poured in on the operational cost of the vehicles. Fleet management includes maintaining and financing vehicles. The speed of the fleet can also be observed. Fleet management helps the company to know about vehicles that need replacement so that they can be changed and made to order timely, which leads to vehicles lasting long. Fleet management also ensures the security of the vehicles by installing tracking devices in them.

Organisations have realized the importance of fleet tracking systems, as it not only helps them in increasing the productivity of the company, but also helps them figuring out that where exactly are they suffering money and time losses.
