Mysql Left Function is used to return the leftmost string character from the string.

Understand with Example

The Tutorial will help you to learn an example from 'Mysql Left Function'. To understand  this example, we simply create a table name'employee1'. The table 'employee1' is created with the required fieldname and datatype respectively.

 

 

 

 

Query to Create Table named employee1:

mysql>CREATE TABLE employee1 (
         ->    Empid int(10),
         ->    Empname varchar(60),
         ->    date date 
         ->  );

Query to insert data into Table named employee1:

Now the insert into add the records or rows to the table 'employee1'.

mysql>insert into employee1 values(01,'Girish','2008-12-20');

mysql>insert into employee1 values(02,'Komal','2008-12-21');
Query OK, 1 row affected (0.02 sec)
mysql>insert into employee1 values(03,'vineet','2008-12-21');

Query to view data of  Table named employee1:

To view the records from table 'employee1' we use select query that displays the table details.

mysql> select * from employee1;

Output:-

Query to view data of  Table named employee1 using Left:

The Query below left keyword returns the leftmost characters in the string as fieldname LeftString. The ' 6 ' would be the length of the left string characters.

mysql> SELECT left ('GirishTewari',6)as LeftString;

Output:-

| LeftString |
+------------+
| Girish     |
+------------+
