What is Social Media?

The working definition of social media could be media for social interaction mediated by web based and technologically enabled media. The social media provides a platform to users to voice their opinions and concern about a particular issue in addition to informal interactions. The social media is a perfect marriage of technology with communication. As communication is a two way process the social media enables it users to talk to a person or company/ organization and express their informally candid remarks for them.

This media acts as a perfect breather from the one sided bombardment of facts and information to the audience by television and print media. Here, people find a platform to vent their angers and opinion to the persons concerned. The arrival of this media has hugely impacted the way we behave and socialize to the people and groups. Major social networking websites like Facebook, twitter and Okut are leading websites that are ruling the roost.

Here we want to make it clear that the social media and social news are two different things. The social news could be a part of social media but both the things are not one and the same.

Let us have a look on the social media websites. There are social media websites for different purposes. Websites like Del.icio.us, Blinklist, Simpy are known for social book marking. While Digg, Propeller, Reddit are specialized in social news. Facebook, Orkut and Twitter can be termed as social networking websites. In addition, there are websites like YouTube and Flickr, where video and images can be shared.
