Pilgrimage is a concept which has been propagated by every religion in its own way and is considered to be immensely significant. It is a journey undertaken for moral and spiritual upliftment. Basically it refers to visiting of shrines or other locations which are regarded holy for some reasons related to myths. In Hinduism, the Char Dham Yatra or the pilgrimage of the four major abodes of God is highly revered by the followers. The Char Dham Yatra comprises of trips to Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri and Yamunotri that are located in the bosom of Shivalik hills of lower Himalayas in Uttarakhand's Garhwal region. These four places are visited by more than 200,000 devotees during a period of about seven months, when the Yatra remains open.

The commencement of the religious journey takes place from April/May (Akshaya Tritiya) and closes in the month of October/November (near Bhai Dooj), due to adverse weather and resulting bad conditions. It is said that by paying visit to this sacred centres once in lifetime, a person can purge of the sins and attain salvation. Moreover the snow-capped mountains, picturesque valleys and an invigorating environment, provide for good sightseeing trip too. There are rough conditions like bad weather, chances of frequent landslides, rocky roads, but then the road to spirituality is always tough. Therefore the trip is advisable only to physically fit people.
Let us find the route and the significance of the four abodes individually:

Yamunotri: To reach the main Yamunotri Temple (about 3293 m above sea level), one has to travel from Rishikesh to Barkot, to Janki Chatti and then trek for 5 km or hire a pony, or can trek/pony ride for about 13 km from Hanuman Chatti. The temple is dedicated to goddess Yamuna and is visited by many tourists. As per a mythological story, the place was once had the hermitage of Asit Muni sage. He was unable to make it to Gangotri during his old age and a stream of Ganga appeared before him opposite to Yamunotri. It is also said that Lord Shiva contained the river in his thick locks to reduce her impact. The Gaumukh in Gangotri glacier, where Ganga originates is located 19 km away from the town of Gangotri. Tapovan, Bhagirath Shila, Bhairon Ghati, Pandava Gufa are some of the other tourist attractions here apart from the temple. Kedarnath: On the bank of Mandakini River, at an altitude of 3584 metres above sea level, lie the Kedarnath Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is the remotest site among all the Dham. The story behind this place says that the Pandavas went through severe atonement to absolve their sins of killing their cousins Kauravas and Lord Shiva obliged. The place requires 21 km and 14 km trek/pony ride from Sonprayag and Gaurikund (4 km away) respectively. The former is situated 30 km away from Guptkashi which is again 192 km aloof from Uttarkashi. Due to recent floods there is less convenience of accommodation and mostly tents are available.

Badrinath: The road from Guptkashi to Joshimath via Rudraprayag is about 158 km and on travelling 46 km further, the pilgrims can arrive at Badrinath. On their way they can explore Rudraprayag, Karnaprayag, Nandaprayag, and Vishnuprayag for a greater experience. Renowned for Lord Vishnu (Badrinarayan) shrine, the Badrinath temple is located at about 3415 mts above sea level and alongside the flowing Alaknanda River. One mythological account refer to the place as the same where Vishnu meditated unaware of the cold conditions and Goddess Lakshmi protected Him by incarnating as Badri tree and hence the name.ADS_TO_REPLACE_3
