Offshore Outsourcing Tips

Introduction

What is the perfect way to go about offshore outsourcing? There are no definite answers to this question. What works in one situation might prove to be disastrous in a different case. The overseas business market is currently highly competitive. Companies and people have to work with people who they know very little of. Selection of associates can be very tricky in such a situation. Even seasoned players make mistakes at times and there are several aspects that need to be studied well before one goes for offshore outsourcing. However here are some tips that can help you with the selection process.

Follow These

  • First things first, have a detailed study conducted on all your requirements. Prepare a list of documents that have detailed the business logic and all other information the vendor will need
  • Try to identify the technologies you might need and prepare a list of these too
  • Once you have all relevant information ready, identify the offshoring location first and then the company
  • Do not hesitate to use the Internet search engines like Google to find companies that have expertise in the area you need
  • Such a search is bound to return a huge list of service providers. Choose which of them look suitable and surf their web sites
  • Look for information like how long the company has been in the offshore outsourcing field, their strong areas and weaknesses, reviews in the market (both positive and negative), experience and areas of expertise etc
  • Once you are done with an Internet search, shortlist a few candidates and prepare an enquiry about the possibility of hiring them. Give a general description of what you need, and submit your query through the company's feedback form on their website
  • The first stages of your contact should be used to find out more about the company. Try to learn more about their prior experience, details of projects they have done so far, pricing, project execution policies, strategy and so on
  • Do not ever disclose information about your project documents and other details unless you decide to go ahead with the negotiation, i.e. in the initial stages. It is important that both parties sign a NDA (Non Disclosure Agreement) before you go ahead with disclosing the details
  • Be clear on jurisdiction that can bind both parties. For instance, if you are outsourcing work from India, you need to go for jurisdiction and laws as applicable to Commonwealth Nations where India is a member country
  • Before you sign the final deal, prepare a draft agreement with help from your law firm and other consultants. Send it to the vendor and have everything clarified mutually before the deal is signed
  • It would be a great idea to visit the vendor's main office in their country and spend some time there. This helps to a better understanding of how things work there.
