Tonga is a country and an archipelago of islands situates in South Pacific Ocean. A British protectorate for close to seven decades, Captain James Cook was the first British explorer to have visited the islands in 1773. Tonga gained full independence from United Kingdom in 1970. Tonga is on its way to become a constitutional monarchy.

Tonga is a group of 176 islands. Tonga is located at the geographical coordinates of 20 South and 175 West. The islands are spread over an area of 748 square kilometres. According to the 2009 census, a population of 104,000 lives in the country. Nukualofa is the capital and the largest city in the country.

The islands of Tonga are further divided into three groups, Vava'u, Ha'apai, and Tongatapu that run along the line from north to south. Tonga has a subtropical climate. The maximum temperature may go up to 32° C while the minimum temperature may fall up to 10°C.
