Access to FTP server can be managed in two ways Anonymous and Authenticated. In the anonymous FTP, the host providing FTP service may provide anonymous FTP access. In this case, the user log in into to service using an 'anonymous' account when asked for the username. The anonymous account entered may be case sensitive (mostly lower-case) in some FTP servers. Most commonly the users are asked to send their email address in stead of a password but no verification is done of the data entered. Using anonymous as username you can access the publicly available files as guests.
Anonymous FTP services are being used by various institutes, government agencies, companies, and individually too who have developed public library of programs, data files, and informational text in their sites that you may access via FTP, commonly in a directory named pub. Many times the user may get specific directions or information about the site in form of greeting messages or files with names like README
FTP clients like WinSCP for Windows or Cyberduck for Macintosh can be used to connect to an anonymous FTP site or it can be also done using FTP command in Windows, Mac OS X, or Unix.
To transfer files using anonymous FTP you need to enter anonymous as username and an arbitrary password to login. Most of the sites tell you to enter a valid email address as password. Once, your login is successful you can establish the connection to browse the public directories on the site.
