One of the most isolated islands in the world, Saint Helena is a British Overseas territory located in the South Atlantic Ocean. This island is of volcanic origin. Discovered by Portuguese explorer in 1502, it became the colony of British in 1834. The constitution of Saint Helena took effect in 1989 and after receiving equal status for its two territories, this British overseas department is known as Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha.

Saint Helena is located at the geographical coordinates of 15.9333 South and 5.7 West. This island is spread over a small area of 122 square kilometres and a population of close to 4,300 people lives here according to 2008 census. Jamestown is the capital of the island of Saint Helena.
