Home to the oldest desert in the world, the Namib Desert, Namibia is an African country located in the southern part of the continent. Till the end of World War 1, Namibia was a German colony before its ownership was given to South Africa. It became an independent nation in 1990.

The geographical coordinates of Namibia are 22 South and 17 East. The total area of this country is 825,418 square kilometres, which makes it the 34th largest country in the world followed by Mozambique. According to the 2009 estimate, a population of around 2,108,665 lives in the country. Windhoek is the capital and the largest city in Namibia.

Namibia shares its boundaries with South Africa in the south and east, Botswana in the east and Angola and Zambia in the north. Atlantic Ocean forms the western border of the country. Namibia is divided into five geographical regions namely The Great Escarpment, Namib Desert, the central plateau, the Bushveld and the Kalahari Desert. The great Escarpment rises to a height of 6,562 feet.

Although the second least densely populated country in the world, Namibia is one of the poorest countries in the world with more than half of its population under poverty line. The population depends on the agriculture to a great extent. The growing number of wildlife conservancies in the country is also providing employment to a large percentage of population.
