Even though the country achieved independence in 1948, it has been marred with numerous civil wars since then.. Myanmar is located at the geographical coordinates of 22 North and 98 East. Spanned across an area of 676,578 square kilometres, Myanmar is home to a population of around 55,400,000 according to 2009 census. It is the 26th most populous country in the world followed by Spain. Myanmar shares its border with India and Bangladesh in the northwest, Tibet in the north and China in the northeast, Laos and Thailand in the southwest. The Hengduan Mountains run along the border with China. Hkakabo Razi is the most elevated peak of the country at a height of 19,295 feet. The major rivers of Myanmar include River Irrawaddy, River Salween (Thanlwin), and the River Sittaung.
Economy of the country has been greatly affected by the civil wars. Government has been making efforts to bring economy back on its feet by boosting its agricultural and tourism sector.
