Named after the Montserrat Mountain, Montserrat was discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1493. Situated in the Leeward Islands of West Indies, Montserrat is a British overseas Department. The frequent volcanic activities in the region have time again destabilized the country due to the destruction caused to them.

Located at the geographical coordinates of 16.75 North and 62.2 West, Montserrat is spanned across an area of 102 square kilometres. The total population of the country is 5,879, which makes it one of the least populated countries in the world. Montserrat lies to the southeast of Puerto Rico and southwest of Antigua. Due to the scattering of volcanic deposits on the coast, the area of Montserrat is expaning. There are rock cliffs on the island, which rise to up to 30 metres above sea level.

Little Redonda and Virgin, and Statue Rock are the two islets of Montserrat. Due to its isolated location, Montserrat is home to some rare species of animals and birds. Rondeletia buxifolia and Montserrat Orchid are some of the unique and endangered plant species found here.

Montserrat was the location of one of the most famous Radio Stations, as a result of which many musicians often visited the island while enjoying the serene beauty around them. But after the destruction caused by Hurricane Hugo, the country's economy has been hit hard. Montserrat is trying to get back on its feet with the help of British government and strengthening its economic system.
