Bordered on the west by Atlantic Ocean, Guinea-Bissau is a country located in West Africa. The geographical coordinates of Guinea-Bissau are 12° North and 15° West. A population of 1,647,000 resides in the country, which is spanned over an area of 36,125 square kilometers. The countries with which Guinea-Bissau shares its borders with are Guinea in the south and Senegal in the north. Ruled by Portuguese once, it got its independence in 1973 and to avoid the confusion with its name similar to Guinea, the name of the capital Bissau was attached to it and thus it is called Guinea-Bissau. Some of the major cities apart from the capital are Bafata, Farim, Buba, Gabu and Bissora.

Forests cover much of the land of this country. Coastal areas, lowland plains and savannas are surrounded by forests. South-central part of the country has the most elevated peak in the country at a height of 123 meters. The temperature of Guinea-Bissau remains warm throughout the year with little variation. Rainy season lasts from June to September and rest of the year is otherwise dry.

Guinea-Bissau does not enjoy a great economy and is one of the poorest countries in the world. Polyrhythmic gumbe genre inspires the music of the country. It is a popular genre, adopted from the French, which has the elements of folk and modern music as well. Carlos Semedo is a famous poet from Guinea-Bissau and a popular figure in Africa.
