An array is a collection of items of same data type.Each item in an array is called an element, and each element is accessed by its numerical index.

Example:

int[] array; // declares an array of integers
array= new int[5]; // allocates memory for 5 integers
array[0] = 1; // initialize elements
array[1] = 2;
array[2] = 3;
array[3] = 4;
array[4] = 5;

System.out.println("Element at index 2: " + array[2]);
