Turkmenistan is one of the Turkic states located in the Asian continent. It is known for its huge reserves of natural gas, which stand at 4th in the world. A single party system is followed by the government. Most of the Turkmenistan is covered with Karakum Desert.

Turkmenistan is located at the geographical coordinates of 40 North and 60 East. The country is spread over an area of 488,100 square kilometres, making it the 53rd largest country in the world followed by Cameroon. A population of 5,110,000 according to the 2009 census is resident in the country. Turkmenistan shares its boundary with Uzbekistan in the east and northeast, Iran in the south and southwest, Kazakhstan in the north and northwest and Afghanistan in the southeast. Ashgabat is the capital and the largest city of the country.

The geography of the central Turkmenistan is characterized by the Turan Depression and Karakum Desert. Along the southwestern boundaries lies the Kopet Dag Range. Gora Ayribaba, located in the Kugitangtau range, is the most elevated peak in the country at a height of 10,292 feet. Some of the major rivers of the country include Amu Darya and Tejen.

The climatic conditions in the country are subtropical desert type. Summers are hot with a very little rainfall whereas winters are mild and dry.

The oil and natural gas reserves of Turkmenistan drive its economy. Whilst the country has a growing economy, a high unemployment rate has been a major concern for the country.
