One of the oldest inhabited places on the earth, Tanzania is an African country located in the eastern region of the continent. Tanzania was colonized by the British after First World War. In 1961, Tanzania gained independence from the United Kingdom.

Tanzania is located at the geographical coordinates of 6 South and 35 East. It is spread over a total area of 945,203 square kilometres, making it the 31st largest country in the world followed by Nigeria. The total population of 43,739,000 according to 2009 census also makes it the 30th most populous country in the world followed by Argentina. Tanzania shares its boundaries with Zambia, Malawi and Mozambique in the south, Kenya and Uganda in the north, Democratic Republic of Congo and Burundi and Rwanda in the west. The border to the east of the country runs along the Indian Ocean. Dodoma is the capital of the country while Dar es Salaam is the largest city of the country.

The northeastern part of the country is mountainous. Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest peak, is located in this region. The country is also home to the deepest lake of Africa, Lake Tanganyika. Africa's largest lake, Lake Victoria lies in the northern region. There is a small seasonal variation in the temperatures of Tanzania. The highland regions though are cooler than the plain areas
