Struts Struts2 Struts 2 Architecture

We had developed application in Struts 1.2 and Struts 2.0. To our surprise Struts 1.2 application run much faster than Struts 2.0 application.

After research we found that Struts 2.0 tags are poor in performance.

What are major differences between these two versions?? I know struts got compibned withwebworks . It will really help if major differences are posted . This site is really helpful for beginners .
