The Connaught Place was first built in the middle of Delhi in 1931. Its construction was finished a few years later. It was built as a market for all sorts of goods. The place was named in honour of the Duke of Connaught, one of the people in the British royal family during the British Rule era of India.
The most notable point about the Connaught Place is its design. It was heavily inspired by the design used for the Royal Crescent, a similar market in the English town of Bath. The central part of the place features a large circle that points outwards into other parts of Delhi.
There are several roads that move towards the main street, Connaught Circus, in the same angle regardless of where they are coming from. The best way to describe this is that it is like a large wheel with a series of spokes coming out from all directions. Overall, there are nine roads that move towards the outside circle and twelve radial roads coming out.
This circular design is based loosely on a horseshoe. This is a design that was created because the horseshoe was considered to be a lucky symbol. The design was believed to be a good luck charm to the businesses that set up shop there and to the people who shopped there.
Today the market is officially referred to as Rajiv Chowk. However, people still refer to it by its traditional Connaught Place name.
All sorts of different stores can be found around the Connaught Place. There are several different restaurants, clothing retailers, bookstores and many other types of stores for people to shop at.
