Tutorial: Photoshop Web Layouts Simple Blog Layout Tutorial

This tutorial is designed for the complete beginner. Create a gradient blog layout.

This tutorial will guide you through the first part of creating a full website.

That's enough chat, let's move straight onto Part 1 - Designing the layout. For this, I will be using Adobe Photoshop. You can download a 30 day trial of this from the Adobe web site. I suggest you do, it's the best graphics program currently available. Ok, so you've installed it. Open it up. Before we start, let's set out our workspace. If this is your first time using Photoshop, the screen in front of you may look a bit daunting at first. Ok, move your mouse and click on "Window" in the top menu bar. This will drop down a list of lovely windows you can have open. There are only four windows you should want open for this tutorial. These four are - "Layers", "Options", "History", and "Tools". Make sure all of these have a tick by them and none of the others do (click again to deselect the tick). It should look like this.
Don't worry about the "Untitled-1" that's sitting at the bottom, that section just shows the documents that are open, you shouldn't have any open at the moment so it will not be there.

Ok, so you now have your windows open and ready to work with. Click on the title of each window to move them around your screen. I tend to have the tools window on the left and every other window on the right. It's more of a personal preference and you can move them around to suit the dimensions of the document that you are working on.

Let's move on, click on "File" and select "New". An exciting window appears asking you what settings you want for your new document. Well, as this is a tutorial, I will tell you a little about what you see.

The width and height - what is this? When in the world of web design, these are probably the most important things you will come across. Usually, when talking about computer graphics, width and height are measured in "pixels". Pixels are the very small usually square dots that make up what you're looking at at this moment. If you look at this web page, the width of the inside box is 750 pixels (usually shortend to "px" rather than "Pixels"). I cannot tell you the width of the page, as this will be different depending on what monitor you're using.
When in web design, the most important thing is to design for every user. This can make things tricky. The problem we have in web design is that every one has different screens, with different resolutions (the resolution is the amount of pixels on that user's screen. You've probably seen them around on monitors and such, the most common resolution is 1024 x 768. This means that the users screen is 1024 pixels wide and 768 pixels tall. Do not get this confused with solid measurements such as inches or centimeters. Pixels are different sizes depending on the manufacturer. For example, one user may have a screen that is 10 inches wide and 768 pixels wide. Whereas another user may have a screen that is also 10 inches wide but may be 600 pixels wide. Do you see what I'm talking about? I hope so). This means that we need to design a web page that will fit onto the smallest users screen.
