The real essence in the mock objects community is that there is a different approach to testing that the mockers practice - and since testing and design are so entwined in the XP world this implies a different set of thoughts about design and development too. Mockers often refer to this difference as the difference between state-based testing and interaction-based testing. My purpose in this article to illustrate these two approaches and to explore the consequences of these differences. The confusion between mocks and stubs are merely a surface symptom of these differences.
