Tutorial Details:
IBM Multimedia Analysis and Retrieval Engine (MARVEL) is an image and video search tool, developed at IBM Research, that addresses the problem of indexing, categorizing, and searching large volumes of images and videos. Current solutions are extremely labor-intensive, requiring manual annotation of content. Manual labeling and cataloging is time-consuming and often subjective, leading to incomplete and inconsistent annotations and thus preventing efficient cataloging of the growing deluge of multimedia data. IBM MARVEL helps to automate the annotation process by using advanced content analysis techniques for labeling and indexing the data. Although this first release deals specifically with digital images, the IBM MARVEL system is designed to support the full, emerging standard for MPEG-7 multimedia content description. This standard defines an XML metadata language for multimedia, which includes images, video, audio, and text.
IBM MARVEL was awarded the Wall Street Journal's 2004 Technology Innovation Award in the Multimedia Category. IBM MARVEL technology is unique in its approach to analyzing and fusing audio, visual, and text information in order to automatically annotate multimedia data. IBM MARVEL pushes the technical boundaries for automatic indexing of video data by relying on machine-learning capabilities and exploiting correlations among annotated concepts. For example, detection of a video scene showing an airplane is improved by detecting that the scene is outdoors as opposed to indoors. Overall, the IBM research team has developed the industry's first multimedia indexing solution that integrates three different search methods of multimedia data based on feature descriptors, semantic concepts, and available metadata. This fusion approach provides users with resources for sequentially building queries of multimedia repositories using multiple individual search tools; these queries result in higher-quality searching.
