  Tutorial: Professional Ajax" review

Professional Ajax" joins a growing list of books with its focus on the hot but ambiguous technology called Ajax

Tutorial Details:

Ajax is really just a myriad of technologies- CSS, JavaScript, and XML all rolled into one, it's not always clear what to expect when you pick up an Ajax book. For a lot of people who already possess a familiarity with the individual technologies that make up Ajax, understanding the bind that brings them all together to form Ajax won't take more than a handful of chapters of any Ajax book. So what fills the remainder of the book's chapters is what separates a good Ajax book from a not-so good one. "Professional Ajax" in my opinion definitely falls on the good side of the fence.

If just judging a book by its cover, "Professional Ajax" gets a good grade from me. I prefer compact books to thick ones that almost always turn out to read like manuals as well. "Professional Ajax" is light and separates well to boot when laid out on the table.

Professional Ajax" isn't so much an Ajax book for "professionals" as it is a well rounded book on Ajax. The book follows a very methodical course as it begins with the very basics of what Ajax is all about to advanced case studies built using the technology. For people new to Ajax, I'm happy to say the opening 4 chapters are probably one of the best introductions to Ajax I've read to date. The authors begin by examining a few asynchronous techniques that predate Ajax and their place, such as the use of hidden frames and iframes, before moving on to exactly how to implement present day Ajax . And no stones are left unturned, from browser differences to Ajax error handling, parsing XML files etc. The example codes are concise and to the point, with the important lines even highlighted. Chapter 5 and onwards focuses on case studies of popular Ajax applications. Having read a few books on Ajax, I know case studies are perhaps as much about filling the pages of an Ajax book as they are in serving a useful purpose to the readers (there's only so much you can talk about how to implement Ajax itself). Luckily the authors are controlled in not letting the examples run wild into the land of bloatedness and confusion. Even for the purists, there are still many useful techniques to be learned within each case study, such as JSON, XSLT, Soap etc.
