Dreamweaver Frames Framesets and Iframes Tutorial

Framesets and iframs are used to bring structure to your website. It?s a good idea to know how and when to use them, when the right situation comes along.
Framesets consist of several pages pieced together. The main page holds only the code which tells the web browser which pages to display and where to display them. This is the page that should be linked to when you wish for the visitor to view all the pages in the frame layout. In the video we called it index, so that it would act as a home page. Remember though, that there is no actual content on this page.

Dreamweaver does not have a built-in method for working with iframes. So we must hand code it. Once it is coded it will appear on the page as a square. To resize it you must edit the code, otherwise the iframe can be moved around the page as if it were an image.

If you wish to use links with frames you must name your frames. They can only be named by editing the code as seen in the video. When creating a hyperlink set the target field to the name of the frame you wish to load the new page in.
Framesets and iframes are not compatible with all web browsers; especially older versions of Netscape. So, pay attention to your audience. Ask yourself: Is your website going to be visited by people that will most likely have out dated computers, or people who keep things up to date?
