Websites without images are mighty boring. Adding images to your site can not only increase its aesthetic value, but its organization as well. Learn how to properly use placeholder images as well as how to insert a basic rollover image.

Image placeholders are useful if you know you are going to put an image on a page but haven?t created the graphic yet. Using placeholder images will make it easier to visualize your site layout and if used properly can help create a great looking site fast. A good approach is to first make a layout with placeholders. This will prevent you from wasting time making images which you might not end up using. They will allow you to create the perfect graphic to take the place of your placeholder.

The only unclear part about inserting an image is filling out the alternate text field. It should be set to . This is not necessary, but it will make the site load better by leaving space for the images on the page while they download. If we didn?t select empty the content on the page would shift around every time an image finished downloading.

Rollover images are kind of cool if you follow a few guidelines:
Don?t load your page with lots of rollover images. It can cause the page to load slowly, since two images need to be downloaded for every one rollover image.
Don?t have ten small rollovers in a row (as a menu for instance). If the visitor runs their mouse over all the images they will change slowly and annoy the visitor. (To get the menu you desire use Flash instead.)
