Tutorial: ASP.NET .NET Custom Validation Controls Tutorial

How to write and implement your own validation controls using the ASP.NET Custom Validation Control.

Tutorial Details:

Custom Validation Controls

The built in form validation controls in asp.net satisfy the most common validation requirements. Occasionally you will want to validate a value to your own requirements, and if it doesn't fit the 4 validation controls RequiredFieldValidator, CompareValidator, RangeValidator or RegularExpressionValidator then you can create your own mechanism using the CustomValidator control.

The CustomValidator control checks user input against whatever function you write to accept or reject values. It allows you to specify both a client-side and server-side function for validating, which makes it exceptionally useful.

The most common scenario where you would want to use a CustomValidator control involves numeric values that don't fit neatly into the RangeValidator. For example, someone enters the year they were born in one field, and the number of years of university or college education they've undertaken.
