How to get started with Linux and file sharing in Linux. An easy and practical howto for those lost in the bush of multiple distros and filesharing networks.

Tutorial Details:

Linux P2P in a nutshell

It is an operating system, i.e. something your computer can not do without. But unlike Windows, Linux is not developped by one (btw, profit-orientated) company, but by a large number of volunteers all around the world.

There are major differences in the way Linux and Windows are constructed. Linux is generally much more secure:

1. getting infected (you can not really catch a dangerous virus on Linux),
2. getting hacked (it is much more difficult to hack Linux than Windows),
3. or getting your system shattered by a low-quality application (Linux has full control over the applications, so they can not accidenatally delete a system file).

It is good to know that some parts, quite big parts actually, of Linux and Windows codes are the same.

Linux was created by a Linus Torvald, at that time studying at the University of Helsinki. It was in some way based on Minix, which itself is based on Unix. The first version of the kernel (the crucial part of the core) was released to the Internet in 1991. Very many programmers from around the world have soon joined in.
