Basics Multi-Stroking a Path

Stroking is useful. It's great for borders, outlines, and various what-not. It has been my experience that the most common form of stroking is Edit?>?Stroke to stroke a selecton, but that is not the only form of stroking in Adobe Photoshop. Yes, there is another, and that is the one we are going to be playing with.

I'm talking about stroking Paths -- much different and more flexible than stroking a selection. Why is it more flexible? Because you can stroke with brushes and tools. Very nice.

We will be using two tools. The first being brushes. Welcome to the Brush palette. The brushes we will be using are circular brushes. You will need to know how to modify an existing brush or how to define a brush. To modify an existing brush, just double-click the brush, or right-click and select Brush Options. I prefer to use New Brush. Click the the little triangle in the upper-right hand corner and select New Brush. Defining new brushes is what I am going to be showing.

As a matter of personal preference, I leave the default brushes alone and always define a new one.

This is the dialoge box we are looking for. The two main atrributes we will be using are Diameter and Spacing. The diameter is how many pixels wide the brush is from end to end. Spacing is a bit trickier. Spacing is the percentage of diameter at which the brush is laid down. For example, if you have a brush of 25 pixel diameter and spacing set to 100%, then a brush is laid down every 25 pixels for a string of circles.
