- Introduction
to Linux
Linux is the kernel of a computer operating system. A kernel is software that enables communications between computer applications and hardware, providing system services like file management, virtual memory, device I/O, and more. An Operating System needs more than just the kernel. The GNU organization ported, wrote and developed many of the software applications that combine with the Linux kernel to make a complete Operating System. This is why you will see the term GNU/Linux used when referring to
Linux. The Linux kernel was created by Linus Torvalds and first announced on the Internet in 1991. Before and during this period, Richard Stallman was creating the GNU organization, writing software like compilers and editors and such, and creating a software license called the General Public License, or GPL. All of this software, and a lot of other programs written, enhanced, and developed by many other volunteers became what is now, in its various flavors, called Linux or GNU/Linux.

- The
Linux Images
It was just a few short years ago that the most viable way of obtaining Linux was to order a cdrom from an online store. Now, thanks to the introduction of broadband internet access and cd burners, you can simply log onto any of the sites below, download the latest ISO Image and burn it to a cdrom. It is perfectly legal, 100% free and totally convenient. Isn't open source great? :).
Once you've downloaded an ISO Image you can mount it as a loopback device. This will give you access to the files in the ISO without you having to burn it to a CDROM first. In order to do this you must have loopback compiled into your Linux Kernel. (Most newer distributions will have this enabled by default). For example if you wanted to mount filename.iso to /mnt/iso you would run the following command: mount -o loop -t iso9660 filename.iso /mnt/iso

- The
Hugh's Linux ISO Mirror site
Okay, this isn't a real automated mirror site using rsync or bittorrent, but it does house the latest versions of my favorite Linux distros for fast download. The other mirror sites are just too slow and busy sometimes! I don't keep all the extras, either, just the ISO images you need to install the main system. This site lives off the main Verio backbone in Houston, Texas, in the good old USA, hosted by EV1Servers, a company with lots of bandwidth and thousands of Linux servers.

- Download Linux ISO Images
An ISO is an Exact Image of a CD, that can be burned again into a disc to get a cloned copy of the original disk
usually ISO images can be anything between 1 to 700MB. so don't consider downloading the ISO if you have a slow connection, unless you are planning to stay online for 2 weeks downloading, especially if you are on a dial-up connection!
In order to burn an ISO Image onto a CD, you need a CD Writer, and CD Writing Software.
I assume that you should be familiar with that already.
- Linux ISO Downloads
We have changed the site around a bit lately and I hope you will all enjoy the new site. We are now offering up to date links for all the latest Linux ISO downloads! You can now download all your linux iso images from one convenient place. These are searchable by distribution, architecture, etc.
You will see a list of distributions on the left hand side of our site. You may select which one you want to download to view a list of mirrors, etc.

Linux in Pipeline
Linux distros (Linux distributions or versions) are tens of megabytes in size. So you need a fast broadband connection or the ability to tie up your dial-up connection for hours and hours. Two top resources for finding Linux distro download links and learning more about them are LinuxISO.org and
DistroWatch. Downloaded distros have the .ISO filename extension, which is why they're commonly called ISOs. For a quick definition of an ISO, see LinuxISO.org's What is a Linux ISO?. For more details on ISOs and how they differ from other downloads, see this SysLinux by Peter Anvin FAQ about
ISOLinux. A future installment of "Tips for Linux Explorers" will cover working with the download to install it. But your first step after downloading an ISO is to check its file integrity.

- Linux ISO Torrents Lists
If you're on the hunt for Linux ISO Torrents you might want to check out the long list of recently released distro torrents over at LinuxISOtorrent.com. They've got frequently updated torrents from A (Arch) to Z (Zen). The site only does one thing, but does it well - helps you get the latest Linux distros downloaded via BitTorrent, quickly.
- Latest News and Updates
in Linux ISO
The second maintenance release in the 0.9.4 series of Foresight Desktop Linux is out: "These maintenance releases help you stay current and also ensure that new downloads include the latest stuff. To update to MR2, 'sudo conary updateall', it's that simple. There are new ISOs (both DVD and CD) and Virtual Machine images as well. Changes in MR2: New kernel 2.6.15.7; A couple version bumps; Banshee MiniMode plugin; Bug fixes."A beta livecd version 0.85 of Phaeronix is now available. It is a Gentoo-based RR4 CD optimised for i686, with GNOME, Reiser4-enabled GRUB and automatic hardware detection. Changes: "The kernel is now based on the 2.6.15-arckck7 patchset with a couple of additions (one to fix acer laptop hangs and the other to fix slow laptop battery polls). Final release is probably going to be based on the new -beyond patchset. The livecd uses a genkernel generated initramfs, but with quite some hacks added to the linuxrc. As a result this initramfs can now probably boot from any media, anything from IDE to external firewire.

- Working
the Linux ISO disks
I have an ancient IBM ThinkPad 380ED that I want to use for an installation of Ubuntu linux. I've downloaded the ISO image from the Ubuntu site, but no matter how I burn it to CD I can't get it to boot on the ThinkPad. So far I have used hdiutil to burn the ISO file itself to a disk, and Finder to burn the contents of said ISO to a CD. Neither works. Inside the ISO image is an "install" folder that contains a copy of SBM (smart boot manager), which went written to a diskette using rawrite does boot the ThinkPad, but produced a cryptic error code when used to subsequently boot from the CD drive.
- Check Your Linux 'ISO'
Welcome to a new, recurring section of Scot's Newsletter called Tips for Linux Explorers. It's become clear to me that a growing percentage of Windows users (including me) are interested in at least dabbling with Linux. You may not be ready to chuck Windows just yet, but it can't hurt to educate yourself either.
Tips for Linux Explorers is aimed at Windows users who would like help figuring out how to download, install, configure, and use Linux. The plan is to offer a new installment of this series in every issue of Scot's Newsletter.A future installment of Tips for Linux Explorers will cover working with the download to install it. But your first step after downloading an ISO is to check its file integrity. A large file is more susceptible to corruption during download than a smaller one, and many a Linux installation has been stymied by a corrupt ISO.
- The
Ubuntu Linux ISO images
Ubuntu Linux is the latest hot Linux distribution, which I had a chance to test last night. I got a free copy of a somewhat old version, which booted fine on my workstation at home and installed in a breeze. The “Hoary Hedgehog” release, which was announced a few days ago includes support for my native language, Greek – a major win of the Greek Gnome team. It’s been a while since I liked working on Linux, so I thought I’d download Ubuntu 5.04 and give it a try. Having a great desktop environment, like Gnome, including Greek support, a fully localized version of OpenOffice and a host of other applications, means that I may also persuade my parents to start using it for their every day work, instead of the dreaded, virus ridden, buggy stuff from Redmond.
- Linux ISO file
MagicISO Maker is a powerful CD/DVD-image-file editor, CD burner, and CD/DVD-backup tool. It can directly create, edit, extract, and burn ISO files. It also can convert almost all CD and DVD image formats to ISO and BIN/CUE. With MagicISO Maker, you can handle DVD images up to 10GB; make CD-image files from CD-ROMs and DVD-ROMs; and burn ISO files and other CD and DVD image files (BIN, IMG, CIF, NRG, BWI, VCD) to CD-R/RW, DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW. The program supports the making of bootable CD and DVD image files; the loading of boot-image files exported by WinISO; the processing of CD and DVD image files with ISO9660, Joliet, Rock Ridge, and UDF volume; edit properties of CD and DVD image files; the searching of files or folders with wildcard characters; the creation of multibootable CD and DVD image files by a bootable setup wizard; expert settings for creating Linux or Unix bootable CDs; and the opening, editing, and extraction of a floppy-disk image file.
- Installing
the Linux
IN PART ONE of this series, I wrote about what kind of PC configuration you need to install Linux, arguing that just about anything can be made to work, if you have some spare disk space.First, however, I'd better address an issue brought up by a reader, who wrote to point out that downloading Linux ISO images or installing Linux over the Internet isn't practical, if one is connected to the Internet through a dial-up link. He is correct. Unless you have a rock-stable dial-up provider and the patience to let files drip down the wire at 56kb or less for days on end dial-up isn't a very viable alternative.
- About
QEMU
QEMU is free software written by Fabrice Bellard that implements a fast processor emulator, allowing a user to run one operating system within another one. It is similar to projects such as Bochs, VMware Workstation and PearPC, but has several features these lack, including increased speed on x86, and support for multiple architectures in-progress.
Fabrice Bellard also wrote a closed source, currently free-of-charge, Linux kernel module (with preliminary ports to FreeBSD and Windows) named kqemu or QEMU Accelerator, which speeds up i386 emulation on i386 platforms to a level where the loss of speed is negligible even compared to native execution. This is accomplished by running user mode and virtual 8086 mode code directly on the host computer's CPU, and using processor and peripheral emulation only for kernel mode (Kernel mode kqemu is in cvs, so this will change soon. But currently it might need some more testing and debugging.) and real mode code.
- Download with BitTorrent
BitTorrent is a P2P (peer-to-peer) application which enables you do download Knoppix from multiple computers at the same time. BitTorrent, when properly set up, will usually give you a faster download than obtaining Knoppix from one of the mirrors. BitTorrent also includes it's own file checking, so will avoid the file corruption problems sometimes seen with the mirrors. Users behind a firewall that they cannot control (such as those downloading at work or at an Internet cafe) may still need to use the mirrors below, but BitTorrent is suggested for most downloaders.
- ISO generation guide
Currently, the process described here has been working on x86, ppc and x86-64. It should work on sparc and sparc64 as well, but it has not been thoroughly tested.
In order to have a reproducible ISO build process, the same sorcery and grimoire revision need to be used throughout the whole process. To achieve such goal, you need to download sorcery and grimoire tarballs in this directory

- The LVLUG
Our aim is to spread the word about Linux, a free operating system. We meet every first Saturday of the month to share our experiences with Linux and to answer questions anyone might have.
Like most other Linux User Groups (LUG), We maintain a mailing list. Most members use the list to get anwsers to any Linux questions they may have and to keep up to date with what the LVLUG is up to. Subscribe to the list if you have questions about Linux or the LVLUG.
- Create
an ISO file
An ISO image file is an image of a CD-ROM disk saved in ISO 9660 format. ISO image files are widely used to store CD content and transfer it through the Internet. ISO is a common CD image format for DOS, Windows (Joliet ISO extension), Linux (RockRidge ISO extension) and other operating systems.
ISO images are generally duplicates of CDs rather than floppies or hard drives. Most popular CD recording programs can burn ISO images onto recordable CDs. Some of these programs even use ISO as their native disk image format.
- The
DSL Test Drive
To say this Verizon DSL caught my eye is an understatement, but what really opened my eyes is that, after five years of waiting, Verizon has finally opened up DSL service in my town. Prior to this the only way to get it was via Covad or its competitors. With the Comcast changeover on my cable Internet service looming, and my SpeakEasy/Covad 384-kbps SDSL service having inched up to more than $108 a month, it was a no-brainer for me to try the new Verizon service.
On June 2 I ordered Verizon Online, and by June 13 it was running perfectly. There were some trials and tribulations in between.
