Free BSD 6.1

Free BSD 6.1

The availability of FreeBSD 6.1-RELEASE. This release is the next step in the development of the 6.X branch, delivering several performance improvements, many bugfixes, and a few new features.

FreeBSD developers continue to improve the FreeBSD 6.X operating system branch with the release of version 6.1 this week.

The new release boasts a few new features, some performance enhancements and lots of bug fixes, which will improve the overall stability of the open source operating system.

Though it doesn't receive the same level of attention as its open source cousin Linux, FreeBSD's roots go back somewhat deeper. FreeBSD is in fact one of the earliest open source operating system projects and is a direct descendant of the original open source BSD work performed at the University of California, Berkeley.

Scott Long, FreeBSD release engineer, explained that the 6.1 release is largely about stability.

"A few new drivers were added, and that's very important for keeping FreeBSD relevant on new machines," Long told internetnews.com. "But the vast majority of the work on 6.1 was focused on stability and polishing rough edges that were found in 6.0."

New features included:

  • Addition of a keyboard multiplexer. This allows USB and PS/2 keyboards to coexist without any special options at boot.

  • Many fixes for filesystem stability. High load stress tests are now run successfully on a regular basis as part of the normal FreeBSD QA process.

  • Automatic configuration for many Bluetooth devices, as well as automatic support for running WiFi access points.

  • Addition of drivers for new ethernet and SAS and SATA RAID controllers.

  • BIND updated to 9.3.2

  • sendmail updated to 8.13.6

FreeBSD is designed to provide higher performance and greater compatibility with other operating systems, and less system administration. FreeBSD(tm) is a full, professional quality, UNIX compatible operating system which is the backbone of many of the world's busiest Internet sites.
