redWall Firewall 1.2.1 RC1 has been released

Kernel 2.6.15.4; udev device management (replaces the deprecated devfs); Unionfs based config (/etc) and data (/var) 'management'; Unionfs based root filesystem (read and write support) if enabled using 'union_root' as kernel boot parameter; completely rewritten save-config and restore-config mechanism; SSH stored configs (on a remote SSH enabled host); configs sent by email are now 'preformated' to be put on a floppy and work right away if booted from that floppy; the hard disk install script now supports 'USB Disk installs'....

The Gentoo Release Engineering team proudly announces the release of Gentoo Linux 2006.0. Gentoo Linux 2006.0, the first release in the 2006 series, represents improvements across many architectures since the 2005.1 release. Major highlights in the release include KDE 3.4.3, GNOME 2.12.2, XFCE 4.2.2, GCC 3.4.4 and a 2.6.15 kernel. This is also the first release with the Gentoo Linux Installer officially debuting on the x86 LiveCD, which will fully replace the Universal and PackageCD set. The LiveCD also features a fully-fledged GNOME environment.

redWall is a bootable CD-ROM Firewall. It's goal is to provide a feature rich firewall solution, with the main goal, to provide a webinterface for all the logfiles generated!
Main features:

1. Configuration is currenty stored on a floppy/USB Memory Stick/Harddrive or sent by email (see todo !)
2. Due the fact, that most reporting functionality is done via mysql (except for the squid reports), it's possible to use the cd as a
Mangagement/Logging Console for other firewalls running in your environment using the same cd! Take snort for instance.. you can have 10
firewalls :) running snort, reporting back to the main database on the management/Logging system, in order to have a central "overview" of all
your firewalls... Using the SAME CD !! It's all up to you how you configure your firewall and/or Management box !
3. based on redhat 9.0
4. bridging support
5. Mail Virusscanning, spamfiltering and gateway functionality
6. /etc is writable (tmpfs) feeded by the configuration medium
7. /var is writable (ramdisk or harddisk) (you are not going to run squid on a ramdisk... aren't you ?)
8. The cd will (at least it should) detect all your network cards (using kudzu) during the initial boot
9. During the initial boot, you can setup some basic things like IP Address, Services to start (all disabled by default) and so on

The redWall Firewall version 1.2.1-rc1 has been released and is availabe for download here:

http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=48799&package_id=41996&release_id=396864

Please be aware, that this new Version and Branch (1.2.x) introduces a whole bunch of changes and contains bugs for sure !!! Therefore i strongly recommend you to read the release notes carefully.

More and more... i strongly depend on your contributions!! Maintaining the distribution is a very time consuming task... and i already received complaints about the missing documentation for example... which p****d me of quiet a bit :-)

Speaking about the Documentation: I've setup a WIKI at http://www.redwall-firewall.com/documentation in which i'm going to put the documentation for the 1.2.x Branch as soon as i have time to do so. Using the wiki... it's much easier for you guys to contribute to the documentation.

SO ANYONE WILLING TO HELP ME WITH THE DOCUMENTATION is invited to contact me in order to receive an acount to edit the wiki which is VERY MUCH appreciated!
