It's my pleasure to let you know that SLAX 5.0.8 has been released. All users are strongly encouraged to upgrade, because all new modules created from now are not readable in older SLAX releases. What's new? The long-awaited SLAX Server Edition is finally available; all other editions are updated too; 2.6.16 Linux kernel; fixed bug in mounting of DOS partitions (long file names work now); the 'uselivemod' and 'configsave' features work again.

About the Slax

SLAX is fast and beautiful Linux operating system which fits on small (3.14") CD-ROM disc. It runs directly from the CD (or USB) without installing. The Live CD described here is based on the Slackware Linux distribution and uses Unification File System (also known as unionfs), allowing read-only filesystem to behave as a writable one, saving all changes to memory.

Changelogs

You'll find here about all new features, addons and bugfixes in the newest version of SLAX so you could decide whether to download it or not.

v 5.0.8 Standard Edition

1.updated to Linux Kernel 2.6.16
2.based on newest linux live scripts
3.updated squashfs and unionfs kernel modules
4.this fixes uselivemod and configsave/configrestore
5.the rest remains the same, KDE 3.5.
6.fixed bug in mounting of dos partitions (long filenames work now)
7.slax now uses only 60% of RAM maximum for its filesystem - Slax Server Edition released, includes Apache 2, PHP 5, MySQL 5.

v 5.0.7 Standard edition

The most important changes:
1. using 2.6 Linux kernel with support for many SCSI devices
2.added KDE 3.5 and Xorg 7 (is the same like 6.9)
3.added squashfs 3.0 support, should be backwards compatible with 2.2
4.added newest unionfs 1.1.2, which fix many bugs but causes the following:
5.uselivemod doesn't work well, needs some fixes in unionfs. Nevertheless
6.you're still able to include downloaded modules in SLAX CD, this works.
7.configrestore is untested but should work.
8.harddisk installer has been removed in this version.

This means: uselivemod and installing to disk is not supported now, please don't waste your time asking about it. Both these features are indeed useful and will be added back as soon as possible, please be patiend.

For Download

SLAX is available as an ISO image of the CD. It fits on small 8cm CD-R(W). Burn it with your favorite cd-writing software and then boot from the CD. You might want to check your BIOS to assure it's set to boot the CD prior the disc.
