| The Ark Linux team is pleased to announce the immediate availability of Ark Linux 2007.1, the latest version of its multi-purpose desktop operating system. Ark Linux can be used for office/school work, desktop publishing, graphics, multimedia entertainment, editing, gaming, software development, and more. There have been many changes since the 2006.1 release - all components have been updated to current versions. |
About Ark Linux 2007.1
Ark Linux 2007.1 includes the KDE 3.5.7 desktop, the OpenOffice.org 2.2.1 office suite and the Amarok music player 1.4.7. It also includes the latest underlying technologies such as Linux kernel 2.6.22.3, glibc 2.6.1, and has been built completely with gcc 4.2.1, resulting in a faster system and quicker response times.
A new and better integrated version of the wine Windows emulator makes it possible to run more Windows applications on Linux than before.
In addition to this, hardware detection has been improved, many new drivers are included, support for encrypted wireless networks has been improved and many additional applications and games have been added to the software repository.
We also have good news for developers and OEMs: The Ark Linux build system has been extended to allow customized builds of both Ark Linux and Ark Linux Live including your packages of choice - making it easier than ever to build your own Linux distribution.

The release of Ark Linux 2007.1 also marks the beginning of the development cycle for Ark Linux 2007.2 - over the next few days, we will upgrade our development tree "dockyard-devel" to snapshots of the upcoming KDE 4.0 desktop. Ark Linux 2007.2 is expected to be released shortly after KDE 4.0 - a pre-release for developers and people who are curious about KDE 4.0 will be made available as soon as the migration is complete.
KDE 4.0, off the bat, has "more shiny bits than kde 3!" Sporting the "Plasma" desktop and Oxygen theme, KDE 4 will add amazing and amazingly beautiful functionality. A perfect marriage of eyecandy and mindcandy. For developers, KDE 4 and Qt 4's programming interface will make developing graphical applications easier and faster than ever.
The Ark Linux team already has plans for KDE 4 and Ark Linux 2007.2 - One of our goals is to integrate KDE 4 as deeply into the system as we can; for example by rewriting our hotplug system to integrate with KDE's 'Solid' and friends, and using KDE 4 to give the user immediate access to a newly plugged in device.
Some components of KDE 4, such as the Qt 4 toolkit, the Blitz graphics library and the strigi desktop search engine, are already available in Ark Linux 2007.1 today.
Ark Linux is a Free Software project that exists and grows only because of the help of many volunteers that donate their time and effort. Ark Linux is always looking for new volunteers and contributions, whether it's help with coding, bug fixing or reporting, helping with support, writing documentation, translations, promotion, money, hardware, etc.
