Linux Release Details:
BeleniX 0.4.4 has been released now
This release marks one more important step for live CD performance. After a couple of months of hacking and testing, this release includes an enhancement to the HSFS filesystem module that improves CD-ROM access time by up to 30%. In addition, a bunch of work is going around packaging so the next major release should be complete with packaging based on Pkgsrc."
About the BeleniX 0.4.4
BeleniX is an OpenSolaris distribution which is currently a LiveCD (runs directly off the CD). It includes all the features of OpenSolaris and adds a whole variety of opensource packages. It can be installed to harddisk as well.
Some More Detail
The significant feature of this release is the development of an I/O scheduler for the HSFS module in OpenSolaris. The HSFS (High Sierra FileSystem) module is responsible for reading from data CDs. The I/O scheduler enhances CDROM read performance by using the following techniques: I/O reordering using the CLOOK algorithm, I/O coalescing that groups together multiple I/O requests into one, semi-asynchronous readahead that greatly benefits sequential access. A detailed technical write-up will be put-up soon. This HSFS enhancement reduces LiveCD boot time by upto 24 seconds.
The CDROM performance enhancement is not only meant for a LiveCD scenario. In fact it benefits general data CD and DVD access greatly like playing audio/video files and install from CD. In tests using a patched Solaris Express installer DVD, the enhancements have provided a 22% reduction in install time.
Updated to a recent OpenSolaris source snapshot(20060626, 26 Jun 200) that contains many fixes and improvements to core OpenSolaris.
