Jama Masjid of Delhi

The Jama Masjid is a massive mosque that is located in Delhi. This is noted for being the most important mosque in the area. It is even seen as the most beautiful mosque in not only Delhi but also in all of India.

The Jama Masjid, which translates to the "Friday mosque," was built over the course of six years. Construction started in 1650 and continued up until 1656. The construction was authorised by Muhammad Shah Jahan I or Shahjahan the Magnificent as he is often referred to. Shahjahan was a Mughal emperor.ADS_TO_REPLACE_1

The building was placed right next to the Red Fort. It is located near where the Chawri Bazar Road of today's Delhi is located.

A notable point about the mosque is that it was built to support a massive number of people. The approximate capacity of the Jama Masjid is around twenty thousand people. These people can fit into the courtyard. The courtyard is a square that is about one hundred meters on each side.

The mosque itself is also very large. It is 65 m in width and 35 m in length. It consists of four large towers around its perimeter. There are also two minarets and three domes in the building. The minarets that are found at the sides are both about forty meters in height and feature a series of steps that are alternately adorned with white marble and red sandstone.ADS_TO_REPLACE_2

The mosque has white marble domes with an outside construction that consists of both white marble and red sandstone. A series of black stripes can be found around the insides of the domes as well.

There are three different gateways used around the mosque. These gateways have different entrance standards. The gateways on the north and south ends of the mosque were open to people for worship.

The eastern gateway is only open on Fridays. The emperor of the land had used this gateway for his own use when the mosque was first built. The main entrances are also protected with a series of massive iron doors. Also, the eastern area features hundreds of steps and plenty of large spaces that were originally used to hold food stores when the mosque was first built. The steps in this area are exceptionally wide and conducive to many worshippers who come to the mosque.ADS_TO_REPLACE_3

These inscriptions are used as tributes to Shahjahan and the virtues that he led in his life. It is also used as the main entrance point to the prayer hall. The three domes in the mosque are located around the prayer hall.

The arches around the prayer hall are supported by a number of pillars. There are more than 250 pillars around them.

An important point about the main prayer hall is that it is open only on a few select days. It is not open on Fridays. It is also closed during a number of important holy days in the Islamic calendar.ADS_TO_REPLACE_4

The Jama Masjid has become a very popular attraction for people in Delhi. However, anyone who does go to the area as a tourist will be subjected to some substantial security checks. This is due to the terrorist attack on the mosque that occurred in 2006.

The Jama Masjid is a truly notable mosque to visit when in Delhi. This mosque is known for more than just its large size. It is also noted for its beautiful design and its many different spaces.
