  OSI model stands for Open System Interconnection. it provides a description of how network hardware and software work together in ayered fashion to make communication possible. it also helps with trouble shooting by providing a frame of reference that describe how components are supposed to function.

  Minor correction. Hubs do not use the data link layer, they do not have a cam table or read layer 2 addresses to store and forward frames. Switches use the data link layer, hubs do not. They operate at Layer 1 of the OSI model and just repeat the physical signals they recieve out to all ports except the port the signal came in on.
