What is Mashup (mash-up)?

Mashups are new generation web applications that are developed using data from different sources. These mashup applications combines the content from many freely available third party sources. These third party sources can be accessed through third party interfaces, API or Java Scripts. Other methods such as web feeds (e.g. RSS or ATOM), webservices and screen scrapping are also very popular and widely used for developing mashups.

Mahups are here to combine the existing data from sources like eBay, Amazon, Google, Windows Live and Yahoo in innovative ways to produce grate sites.

Mashups Types:

Now I will explain you the types of mashups being developed these days.

a) Mapping mashups:
With the advent of web mapping technology and Google’s introduction of its Google MAP API, people started experimenting with new exciting technology. As a result they came out with new ideas to use free maps and develop grate websites and web applications. Later on Microsoft (Virtual Earth API), Yahoo (Yahoo Maps API) and AOL (MapQuest) released their Map API. These days developers are using these API’s to develop big Map mashups.

b) Video and Photo Mashups:
Combining the videos from multiple develops a video mashup. Video mashups are gaining popularity and people are developing video mashps.

Combining photos from many different free photo sources develop photo mahsups.
