Contact Lenses- Technology at its Best!

The evolution of contact lens has proceeded from eye wear to correct visual defects in day to day use, into the field of sports. Initially these lenses were extremely fragile (some of them still are), but now, they have been modified to have remarkable performance. Many athletes make use of these while playing. They are a change from bulky glasses that people have been wearing for ages together. There has been a great evolution in contact lens technology of late. Contact lenses have progressed from hard to soft, to ones with added features that make it more comfortable for users. These contact lenses make use of plastic as a type of composite product. There have been many developments in recent contact lens technology.

The advancements in contact lens technology have been fuelled mainly due to the demands of athletes, who required something more rugged for their use during practice and actual play. Glasses won’t work for them so they came to a stage where they required something that was not so tough to handle. Hence they decided the best idea would be to use to lenses. But during those times these lenses were very soft and the athletes objected to their use during sporting events as they were too delicate and ripped even while playing. This marked the evolution of hard contacts. Modern lenses have evolved to filter light wavelengths, which help a lot in sports as athletes and sportspersons are exposed to glaring light while playing, due to excessive lighting.

The advancement in contact lens technology has also been a boon to the ocular physiology of the person. The technology involves the use of a tissue type material that blends with the retina of the eye. These are tested under various conditions to suit the moisture of the eyes and tough external environmental conditions, and the effects on the eyes were studied. Its plastic nature or its glassy structure has the capacity to fit into the retina of the eye without the eye rejecting it under even stressful physical conditions that involved excessive exposure to light and rough conditions. These are made from gel plastic that contains high water content. The greater the water content, the softer they are. And the more comfortable they are. They can last for almost a year with good care.

The technology has improved by the year because the demands are so high for manufacturing of these lenses. They are made of silicone gel too, which is a prime element in their manufacture. The properties of this material are very beneficial to contact lenses. They tend to have a comforting effect on the eye. The eye does not discard it a foreign material and the gel soaks in the excess moisture present in the eye with ease. This property is of great advantage. The fact that it retains the moisture content is beneficial to the eye as rejection of foreign objects is based on that. The greater the moisture content the greater the compatibility of the eye towards a foreign body on it.

Hence such lenses are designed in such away that it meets the requirements of existing and probable users. The advancement in contact lens technology has indeed made a huge impact, and more and more people are turning to modern lens for everyday and extreme use!
