The main idea behind broadband was to improve the speed of the data transfer. Information is required in huge amounts these days. This is to satisfy the needs of customers. It is basic nature of human beings to be impatient. This was one reason why the entire concept of broadband came into the picture.
As such applications making use of telecommunication have advanced the rates of data and have ended up being inadequate to support numerous applications. A 2 MB broadband connection is used these days the data rate or the transfer rate is no lower than 2 MB per second, which is tantamount to easy connectivity and fast browsing and greater downloading speeds. Such a speed is required now days, with the growth of the Internet. It has been under study for years. The original version is now known as broadband ISDN. It provides subscribers of the network with rates of data in the range of 600 mbps, almost 500 times quicker than PRI rate.
Technology has been working to support higher rates but is not yet implemented or standardized. Broad band is the outcome of the evolution of the telephony system. The 2 MB broadband system however represents a revolution in thinking, which radically alters entire aspects of communication. It is based on the shift from metal cable to fiber optic cables. The majority of current research and development in the fields of telecommunication and networking is however devoted to bringing this revolution about completely- not everyone possesses a 2 MB broadband connection.
SERVICES:
There are two types of broadband related services:
- Interactive: These are those that need two way exchanges that are between either two types of subscribers or between subscribers and the service provider. They are of two types: Conversational and messaging.
- Conversational services are those such as telephone calls that support real time exchanges. These real time services can be used for telephony, video telephony, video conferencing and data transfer.
- Messaging services are store and forward exchanges. These services are bi directional meaning that all parties in an exchange can use them at the same time. The actual exchange however may not occur in real time. One subscriber asking another for information may have to wait for an answer even though both parties are available at the same time. These services include voice mail and data mail and video mail.
- Retrieval: These services are those that are used to retrieve information from a central source called an information center. These are similar to libraries and allow the access of the public and users to obtain information on demand. That is, the information is not distributed to others unless asked for.
Such features make broad band very convenient for users all over the world for speedy communication and data transfer at higher rates than anyone can imagine. Indeed, high end broadband connectivity makes the world a smaller place!
