Gold Plating: All That Glitters

Gold plating is described as an electroplating process where an electrically conductive item is coated with a layer of gold using electrical current. Most probably, you have already seen items that are end products of gold plating. Some inexpensive jewelry with a fine coating of gold are products of gold plating.

The gold plating process is fairly simple. First, the object that will be coated will be placed with a negative charge. After putting a negative charge on the object it will then be immersed in a salt solution of gold. Because it is positively charged, the metallic ions of the salt will be attracted to the negatively charged object. The positively charged ions will revert back to their metallic form giving you a newly electroplated object.
