Inhabited first by Polynesians around 3000 years ago, Tuvalu is an island country located in the Pacific Ocean. Spanish explorer Alvaro Mendaña discovered the islands in 1568 and British started colonizing the islands from late 19th century. Tuvalu gained independence in October 1978 and is a United Nations member since 2000.

Tuvalu is located at the geographical coordinates of 8 South and 178 East. These islands are spread over an area of 26 square kilometres that makes it the 4th smallest country in the world by total area. Also a population of just around 10,472 according to the 2010 census makes it the 17th least populous country in the world. The atolls of the island include Funafuti, Nanumea, Nui, Nukufetau, Nukulaelae and Vaitupu.

The geography of the Tuvalu is mainly dominated by low-lying areas. At around 5 metres is the most elevated peak in the island. Funafuti is the largest atoll in Tuvalu. The island is famous for Ecotourism. The beautiful beaches, lagoons and reefs this island is endowed with, fascinates tourists who have started to come here in large numbers. Tourism along with some foreign aid drives the economy of the country as it lacks the essential natural resources. The traditional sport of kilikiti, a form that is very alike Cricket, is the most popular in the islands along with the other sports like football, rugby and volleyball.
