Sao Tome and Principe is an island country in the Gulf of Guinea placed off the western coast of Central Africa. The Portuguese explorers, in honour of Saint Thomas, named this island.

Sao Tome and Principe is located at the geographical coordinates of 1 North and 7 East. It is spread across an area of 1001 square kilometres. The population of 163,000 according to 2009 census makes it the second-smallest African country though it is also the 71st most densely populated country in the world followed by Kuwait. São Tomé is the capital of the island and also the largest city.

The climatic conditions in the islands vary according to the altitudes. While at sea level, temperature is hot and humid, it is generally cooler in mountainous regions. Sai Tome is home to the world's smallest ibis, the Sao Tome ibis.

Economy of the island is supported by plantation agriculture and fishing. Sao Tome shares strong trading relations with the Portugal.
