Heard and McDonald Islands are an Australian overseas territory situated in southwest Indian Ocean. These islands are located at a distance of around thousand kilometers from Antarctica. Volcanic in nature, they are a group of desolate Antarctic Islands. Australia's two active volcanoes lie in Heard and McDonald Islands.

Located at the geographical coordinates of 53.1° South and 72.5167° East, Heard and McDonald Islands are spanned across a total area of 368 square kilometers. These islands are mountainous in nature with glaciers covering those mountains. The Mawson Peak is the most elevated peak of these mountains at a height of more than 9000 feet. There is a distance of just over 43 kilometers between the Heard Island and the McDonald Island. Both are placed on the Kerguelen Plateau.

It was in 1992 that the McDonald volcano first erupted after being dormant for thousands of years. After 1992, several volcanic activities have been noted in this island. These islands have not been home to any population. On the other hand, Heard island has been paid some visits by researchers and scientists off-late.

The climate of Heard and McDonald Islands is Antarctic type. Summers are cold while winters are freezing. In such climate, some growth of plants like mosses, lichens and grass has been observed.
